I am willing to buy a boat and need advice whether to buy a Four Winns boat or a Sea Ray boat?

How are you gonna pay for it, Ahmed? Coffee beans don't have as much value here as they do where you come from.I am willing to buy a boat and need advice whether to buy a Four Winns boat or a Sea Ray boat?

Sea ray boat wont stay running, but does fire up..?

i have a 135 hp mercruiser 3.0 , it will fire up but only if i keep it excellerated up... when i idle it down it stalls out. any boat experts out there. thanks, jimSea ray boat wont stay running, but does fire up..?
Check the carb adjust "idle" screw and make sure it isn't set to low. Should idle around 700 rpm. Also, how old is the fuel. Try using new fuel and see if get results. Check out "iboats.com" inboard forum on further boat problems. Great website with many boaters discussing problems they have with similoar motors and how to resolve problems. Also, best prices for replacement parts compared to those boat dealer crooks.Sea ray boat wont stay running, but does fire up..?
If it's an older boat, check your fuel pump pressure at idle, if the return spring is broken, it won't make full strokes at low RPM and therefore it will fail to warm idle due to gas starvation.Sea ray boat wont stay running, but does fire up..?
is the fuel fresh?if not drain it and put fresh in.but you will need to pull the carb and clean it look at the main jet i bet it has crap in it then once its clean put some sea foam in the fuel and run it the sea foam will clean and lube the carb and engine.
don't adjust anything but clean carburetters and filters

  • Speaking of hours, how about 500 on a 5.7L in a 1994 22' Sea Ray ON. Great cond. Any big expenses looming?

500 hours is nothing on a 5.7L gas, v-8 engine.

I can't predict big expenses, nobody can.

But have a marine mechanic go thru it to see.Speaking of hours, how about 500 on a 5.7L in a 1994 22' Sea Ray ON. Great cond. Any big expenses looming?
Yes, I would have it inspected by a marine surveyor because the boat is 16 years old. You could have damage (not seen to the naked eye) to the hull and transom plus the boot on the I/O probably will leak when you put it in the water. Low hours on the motor sometimes is not good because the water pump impeller will be worn or frozen and then fuel system could be deteriorated and the gas tank should be replaced because it might be fiberglass which can not tolerate the ethanol in the gas. A couple of hundred dollars for an inspection will save you problems that might cost thousands to fix.

how to winterize my sea ray boat?

ok first time boat owner of this type merc cruiser 140 i/o motor what do i have to do to get it ready for the winter

i know draining the water from motor but do i put anti-freeze in it or leave it empty

thanks how to winterize my sea ray boat?
Each marina has their own way of winterizing. At our place, because we carry the Ontario "green marine" certification, we use no antifreeze. All freezeable fluids are either drained or pumped. For first-timers, i suggest you take it to a tech, spend the $150-200, and for an extra $50, or beer, he'll probably tell you exactly what he does. Here's a link to Mercs' 2cents on winterization. Good to here from you guys.

Since you are a first time boat owner and probably nil experience on basic mechanical skills (oil changing don't count), you absolutely must quickly take your boat to a certified Merc service shop and get it winterized. This is not a job for beginner do-it-yourselfers, only highly experienced individuals and marine techs should handle inboard or I/O winterization.

This is something not to take lightly or put off, all it takes is one good freeze to wreck your engine block if not winterized PROPERLY beforehand. This is a $6,000 to $9,000 replacement job to fix, no BS about that price tag. how to winterize my sea ray boat?
change the oil / filter 20w40

    fog the engine

    add gas stabilizer

    change the fuel filter

    change gear oil

    grease the outdrive

pull all the drain plugs re install plugs remove one side of a hose and pour antifreeze into the block

    lower the out drive

remove the battery store some place warm

    clean the boat

make a list of what needs to be done in the spring (reinstall plug)

Its alot of work especially the first time trying to find everything

I have swapped out a lot of engines because of 1st timers. Take it to a Herc Dealer, and stick around ask ?s. We do not leave our engines dry, The air inside causes rust. Some people do their own, but pay the price later. So it is really pay now or pay me next spring, a whole lot more. By the way they do not make 140 truck blocks, which that is anymore. So you will have to re-power your boat$$$$$. how to winterize my sea ray boat?
the steve is overboard.... fog the engine drain the block (both sides) drain the risers...exaust manifolds both sides make sure there is no water in the lower unit you may have to drain your power stering pump cooler store with the drive down need help mjmik1@yahoo.com

MAKE SURE WATER COMES OUT OF ALL PETCOCKS YOU MAY NEED TO USE A WIRE (COAT HANGER) TO CLEAN THEM OUT WATER SHOULD COME OUT OF ALL DRAINS

    I have a sea ray that's leaking/ |It's a boat..?

i got the boat running and now it's leaking right out of the back of the motor, it feels like a bearing housing, but i am not sure , does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it ,does the motor have to come out and is it worth it ,it is a 1986 searay merc cruiser 140 alpha one thank you...............I have a sea ray that's leaking/ |It's a boat..?
I am betting what you are referring to is whats called a core plug. Some people call them freeze plugs. Its a popular misconception that they are there to keep the block from freezing and busting but they are actually casting plugs that let the sand out after the engine is formed. If thats what it is it depends on which one it is to determine if the engine needs pulled. If you can feel it with your fingers I am betting a good tech can put one in for you. If your doing it yourself go with the rubber expanding ones simpler and just as good to stop the hole.
leaking water then patch it with marine epoxy

leaking oil then remove and repair. It's worth it for peace of mind.I have a sea ray that's leaking/ |It's a boat..?
if it's water, could be the swivel pin or the boot has a hole. to repair either the boat will need to be hauled onto land. can be very expensive. you may consider a short block. marine labor charge in my area is $85 dollars an hour. my guess for haulig and launching is $400. if you can afford it and you feel its worth it, get a complete new engine.
Could be the stern gland that has become disalighned, or a bent shaft, if it has an inboard engine.I have a sea ray that's leaking/ |It's a boat..?
I would bet it is the bellows (rubber boot connecting from stern drive to boat) these usually get replaced every 5 years or so - feel them, if they are getting hard and brittle, replace them, also, if there is a whole, I bet you can find it.

My boat does the same thing..it starts first, but then won't idle. 1987 Sea Ray. Mercruiser 165?

The boat has new spark plugs....complete tune up. Initially it starts right up, but if you let it die...you can crank and crank, but it won't start. I took it to a mechanic who said the timing was out of whack. We got that fixed. I took it to the lake today. It fired up. We had a great time until we got to the dock. I let it die, and it wouldn't start back. It just won't idle and then dies.My boat does the same thing..it starts first, but then won't idle. 1987 Sea Ray. Mercruiser 165?
When cold, you move the throttle to high idle and also choke the engine as you crank it over. However if you do this to a hot engine, it takes a couple hours to cool off after running for say 30 minutes, it won't start. If your engine restarts normally, cold. Try cranking with no throttle and no choke. Give it throttle as soon as it starts. If this doesn't help, check the carb idle settings Good Luck!My boat does the same thing..it starts first, but then won't idle. 1987 Sea Ray. Mercruiser 165?
First step, as always, is to check for water in the fuel. Do you have a water seperator type filter? if not, have one installed. Next, check fuel pump output to the carb. If that is OK, you probably have some floating debris in the carb, needs to be rebuilt, unless you are a tech, i'd let the pros do that. By the way, that 165 is the best motor Merc ever made, you can't beat em with a big stck!My boat does the same thing..it starts first, but then won't idle. 1987 Sea Ray. Mercruiser 165?
    Carb may be flooding the engine%26gt; At idle%26gt; Then you can crank %26amp; crank but just dumps more fuel%26gt; Be careful if you take the flame arrester off as it can back fire %26amp; cause a fire%26gt;
